Quote the job before the digitizer touches it

The customer wants a number today. The digitizer charges $45 to tell you what the stitch count will be, and they’re three days out anyway. So you guess. This tool is a less-bad guess.

The math, briefly

Filled area times stitches-per-square-inch, plus perimeter times stitches-per-linear-inch. That’s the whole formula. The interesting part is the constants.

Real digitizing varies based on the digitizer’s underlay strategy, their satin-vs-fill judgment, and how much they fight the trim minimizer. We’re within roughly 20% of what you’ll actually get back. Good enough to pick a price tier. Not good enough to put on a final quote without a digitizer’s confirmation.

Pick a coverage preset

  • Light coverage - mostly outlines and satin stitching, sparse fill. Pick this for monogram-style logos, line art, or designs that read as "outline + small text".
  • Standard promo logo - the default. Mix of fill regions, outlines, and satin like a typical promo embroidery job.
  • Dense fill - heavy fill across most of the design (badges, patches, premium-feel pieces with full coverage).

If you’re not sure, pick Standard. The presets are calibrated to real-world digitized promo work, not raw fill density - a digitizer substitutes satin / run / unstitched over much of the “colored area”, so the effective stitches-per-square-inch is lower than the often-cited 7,500-10,000 figure for fill stitching alone.

Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate stitch count for embroidery without a DST file?

Upload your logo, set the imprint size in inches, and pick the density preset that matches your supplier (Standard fill is the safe default). We measure the design's filled area and outline length, then apply industry-standard stitches-per-square-inch and stitches-per-inch rates. The result is a ballpark you can quote on before paying for digitizing.

What's a typical stitch count for a left-chest logo?

6,000 - 12,000 stitches for a standard 3-4 inch left-chest design. Simple text monograms run 4,000 - 6,000. Detailed multi-color logos with small text can hit 12,000 - 20,000.

Will my real digitized count match this estimate?

Usually within ±20%. The variance comes from the digitizer's underlay choice, satin-vs-fill decisions, trim minimization, and pull compensation. Our estimate is good enough to set a price tier; confirm the final number with the digitizer before locking the customer quote.

What coverage preset should I pick?

Use Standard promo logo for typical promo work. Light coverage for monogram-style or outline-heavy designs (mostly satin and run stitching, sparse fill). Dense fill for badges, patches, or premium pieces where most of the design is heavily filled.

Why is your estimate lower than the “7,500 stitches per square inch” rule of thumb?

Because that rule of thumb describes the density of fill stitching alone, not the effective stitch count of a real digitized logo. Digitizers substitute satin and run stitches for most outlines and small details, leave background regions un-stitched (the garment color shows through), and consolidate similar-color regions. For typical promo embroidery the effective density is closer to 4,000-5,000 stitches per square inch of colored area, not 7,500-10,000. The estimator is calibrated against real digitized promo logos so the number you get matches what a digitizer will actually return.
