DECADE.promo and your UPS or FedEx account

Most promo distributors use the supplier's shipping account by default. That is fine for the first few orders. The moment your shipping volume reaches the threshold where UPS or FedEx will negotiate a per-distributor rate, switching to your own account becomes the single largest margin improvement available without selling anything new.

When supplier accounts are the right call

Low volume, occasional orders, no shipping leverage to negotiate with carriers. The supplier's account at their negotiated rate is fine, the cost is bundled into the supplier invoice, and you pass it through to the customer. Most distributors stay on this for the first year.

When to switch to your own account

Once you ship 50+ packages a month across all suppliers, UPS and FedEx will negotiate. Typical first-tier negotiated rates beat published list by 25 to 40%. On a $35 shipping cost that is $9 to $14 of margin per package, multiplied by your monthly volume.

The negotiation tactic most distributors miss

Both UPS and FedEx will give a better rate when they know you have a competing offer from the other. Get a baseline rate from one. Take it to the other. Bring the second offer back to the first. Two cycles usually unlock a meaningful additional discount. The carriers expect this; do not feel awkward about it.

Your shipping account is a margin lever you control. Use the supplier's for low volume, switch to your own when the math works, and play the carriers against each other for the negotiated rate.
