Handling tax-exempt customers cleanly
A tax-exempt customer has a state-issued certificate that exempts them from sales tax on qualifying purchases. The legal requirement is that you keep a copy of the certificate, link it to the customer, and apply the exemption only on orders that qualify. The operational requirement is that nobody on your team has to remember any of that.
Capture once, apply everywhere
Each company in DECADE.promo can be flagged tax-exempt with the certificate uploaded as a PDF and stored against the company record. Every customer who works for that company inherits the flag automatically. Every order to one of those customers ships at zero tax with a line on the invoice that records the exemption certificate ID.
When the exemption does not apply
Per-state rules. A New York state nonprofit is exempt for orders shipping to New York but typically pays tax on orders shipping out of state. We follow the ship-to state rule and surface the override on the order if the customer is exempt in some states but not others.
Audit trail for the day a state asks
When a state department of revenue asks why an order shipped tax-free, you click into the order, see the exemption certificate ID, click through to the certificate PDF, and have your answer in fifteen seconds. The certificate has a captured-on date, an expiration date if the state issued one, and a record of every order it covered.
